Shostakovich Symphony no.10 – State Orchestra Saarbrücken
What van Alphen orchestrated in terms of intensity, from the almost inaudible pianissimo to the nearly unbearable fortissimo, was admirable. The orchestra responded excellently, with many beautifully sounding solos, especially from the woodwinds. There was no lack of temperament nor precision. Shostakovich, tossed back and forth between ostracism by the Soviets and artistic recognition, was able to complete his Tenth in 1953. The State Orchestra interpreted it with intense commitment, technical skill, and artistic conviction.
